Caudata incertae familiae

Middle/Late JurassicInner Mongolia, China
Family
Caudata incertae familiae
Genus
Jeholotriton
Authority
Wang, 2000
Original combination
Jeholotriton paradoxus
Age
Middle/Late Jurassic
Locality
Inner Mongolia, China
Diagnosis
Jeholotriton differs significantly from Chunerpeton and Liaoxitriton from the same locality in osteological features, distinguishable by pterygoid, vomerine tooth row, external gill, scapulocoracoid morphology, and ossification of carpals, tarsals, and hyoid apparatus. Jeholotriton's pterygoid directed toward skull midline, vomerine tooth row longitudinal, scapulocoracoid coracoid end nearly circular, carpals and tarsals unossified, hyoid ossification very weak. Notably, although Jeholotriton shares with Chunerpeton from the same locality three pairs of feather-like external gills, it differs from Chunerpeton in lacking ossified gill rakers, so even young individuals can be distinguished by this feature. Diagnostic features same as genus.
Remarks
Remark Wang Xiaolin et al. (2005) considered the strata at Wubaiding, Lingyuan, Liaoning (Pangerpeton fossil locality) equivalent to the Daohugou fossil bed, Inner Mongolia. equivalent to the Hugou fossil layer.
